BREAK-2: meaning and examples

Good morning everyone.

Today we continue our look at different uses of and expressions with the English word break.

Today's expression with break is: to break away (from somebody or something)

Meaning 1: to escape from someone who is holding you or keeping you prisoner.

Example 1:
The young child broke away from his parents and ran into the street. Luckily he didn't get hit by a car.

Meaning 2: to leave a political party or a state.

Example 2
The people of the province wished to break away and form a new state.

Meaning 3: to move away from a crowd or group, especially in a race.

Example 3
The cyclist broke away from the pack and opened up a 45 second lead. With just 8 miles to go, it's very likely that he will win the race.
