TO GIVE SOMETHING AWAY

Hello everyone and welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. Good morning.

Today and tomorrow we will look at some common phrasal verbs with the verb GIVE.

Today's phrasal verb is: to give something away

Meaning 1: to tell someone information or facts that should be secret. This is a separable phrasal verb.

Example 1: If I tell you a secret, will you promise not to give it away? I'm going to quit my job next month, but I haven't told my boss yet. Please don't tell anyone!

Example 2: The spy was trained not to give away the secret codes to the enemy. 

Meaning 2: to give something to someone without asking for payment.

Example 3: Karen is moving to a smaller apartment so she's giving a lot of furniture away. Call her if you're interested in any of it.
