TENSE TUESDAY: THE PAST PERFECT AND SIMPLE PAST: meaning and examples

Hello, everyone, and welcome back to The Daily Vitamin! We hope you enjoyed your break.

For today's Tense Tuesday, we are looking at the Past Perfect and the Simple Past in the same sentence.

The Past Perfect form is HAD PAST PARTICIPLE. We use it with the Simple Past when we have two events that happened in the past and we want to show the order that these events happened. The Past Perfect event happened FIRST and the Simple Past event happened SECOND.

Example 1: I got home and realized I had left my keys at work.
(This person left their keys at work first, and then got home and realized this.)

Example 2: I'd driven for ten minutes before I noticed my books on top of my car!
(This person drove first, and then realized their books were on the car roof.)

Example 3: He had visited our house three times before he saw the photo on the wall.
(This person visited first, and then saw the photo.)

Example 4: I had never been to the theatre until I went last Friday.
(This sentence uses a negative Past Perfect. This person
didn't have this experience before they went to the theatre on Friday.)

That's all for today. We had never written a post about the Past Perfect and Simple Past until we published this one today. I hope you enjoyed it!

Have a great day, and thanks for reading! We will see you tomorrow for Wordy Wednesday.
