Today's SHOOT expression is: to shoot yourself in the foot (informal)
Meaning: to do or say something that will cause you a lot of trouble or harm, especially when you are trying to do something advantageous for yourself.
Example 1:
I think the president has shot himself in the foot twice by turning down excellent offers from competitors who want to buy the company. He says he's waiting for a better offer, but in this crisis it may never come!
Example 2:
The marketing director often shoots himself in the foot with his marketing campaigns that overtly criticise our competitors. I think those campaigns actually hurt our reputation.
