PRONUNCIATION: PRESENT VS. PRESENT: meaning and examples

Hello and welcome back to December's holiday edition of the Daily Vitamin. Today we are looking at a word that is both a noun and a verb: PRESENT. Depending on its use, the word is pronounced differently.

As a noun, we put the stress on the first syllable of the word (PREsent). The noun PREsent has two meanings, and the pronunciation is the same for both.

Definition 1: a gift

Example 1: It is always difficult to buy my Dad a PREsent.

Definition 2: the current time; now

Example 2: We learned about the PREsent Perfect in class today.

As a verb, we put the stress on the second syllable of the word (preSENT).

Example 3He has to preSENT his report to his boss tomorrow morning.

Example 4: I preSENted my research project to my professors.

That's all for today. As always, I'd like to thank you for reading! We will see you back here tomorrow for a lesson involving a clip from a very famous Christmas movie. Stay tuned!
