PRINCIPAL vs. PRINCIPLE: meaning and examples

Good morning / afternoon / evening everyone, depending on when you are reading this. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin

Today we look at another pair of words that are often confused in English. Today's words are pronounced the same, but have different spelling and have different meanings. 

Word 1: PRINCIPAL

Meaning: first in the order of importance.

Example 1: My principal reason for moving was to be closer to work. I spend much less time getting to and from work now.

Example 2: That country's principal export is oil.
  
Word 2: PRINCIPLE

Meaning 1: a basic idea or rule that explains or controls how something happens or works.

Example 3: This company works on the principle that all employees have the same rights.

Meaning 2: a moral rule or standard of good behaviour.

Example 4: I could never lie about Ziggurat's services to a potential client. It goes against my principles.
