MEANING OF 'HARDWARE'

Good morning. Today is a holiday in Barcelona, but we decided to send the Daily Vitamin anyway.

Today's word is: Hardware

Meanings:
(1) computer equipment (CPU, monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.) which is NOT software.
(2) the equipment, machines and vehicles used in a particular area of activity, such as the military.

Example 1: Since the software companies are continuously updating computer software, I feel obliged to update my hardware every two years or so; it is getting quite expensive.

Example 2: The Pentagon assumed that having superior military hardware was going to guarantee a quick victory in Iraq.

Keeping in mind what the possible meanings of hardware are, do you know what a hardware store is? A hardware store is a shop that sells metal goods and things for your home and garden, such as pans, knives, tools and chemical products.

Example 3: One of the most well-known hardware stores in Spain is Leroy Merlin.

Example 4: I'm going to the hardware store to buy some paint. Do you need anything?
