I RESPECTFULLY DISAGREE: meaning and examples

Good morning / afternoon / evening everyone, depending on when you are reading this. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope you are having a good day!

Today we continue our look at different phrases and expressions used to disagree with other people. You can always say I don't agree, but we want to give you some other options.

Following are three more phrases that you can use to disagree with people.
I respectfully disagree.
I beg to differ.
I don't think I can go along with that.

Example 1:
Janet: I don't think we should waste time expanding into France right now. I think we should first expand our client base in Spain.
Helen: I respectfully disagree. I like your idea of expanding our client base in Spain; but I think we should move into France right away... while we are also working on our client base in Spain. What do you think?
Janet: Agreed.

Example 2:
Hannah: Mike, the only reason sales are down is because of the economic crisis; it's not the fault of the sales representatives.
Mike: I beg to differ. I know the market is difficult right now, but have you seen Olga's sales numbers? She is selling more than ever. So instead of making excuses for your team, why don't you help them change their mindset. They can sell in this challenging market. Just ask Olga.
Hannah: Okay...I guess you're right. I'm going to turn things around. Give me 10 days to make the change.

Example 3
Jack: Mary... I need you to lay off at least 3 people from the marketing department by the end of the week.
Mary: I don't think I can go along with that. We are already at a minimum in the department. If we eliminate three more people, we are never going to meet our marketing deadlines and sales are going to fall. How about if we have a brain-storming session tomorrow to figure out other cost-cutting options that won't hurt the sales department so much.
Jack: Okay. You're right. I'll see you tomorrow.

Hopefully, you can use some of these phrases in your daily English interactions sometime in the near future. For the moment, I encourage you to create your own sentence(s) with one or more of these expressions on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter/X) and we will give you feedback as soon as possible.

I hope you have a great rest of your day.

All the best!
