HALF-1: meaning and examples

Good morning. Today we are going to begin a short series of Daily Vitamins about expressions with the word half.

Meaning of half: either of two equal parts into which something can be divided; either of two periods of time into which a sporting event, a concert, etc. is divided.

Example 1:
The team played very well in the first half, but they played even better in the second half.

Example 2:
He always eats a half of an orange for breakfast.

In English there are lots of expressions and compound words that use the word half. (A compound word is a word made up of two words, sometimes separated by a hyphen and sometimes not. Some examples would be pancake, school bus or half-brother.) Over the next several days, we will look at some of these expressions and compound words with half in them.

I am only working a half day today, but if you have any questions about today's Daily Vitamin, please post your questions in the Daily Vitamin section on our website.
