FALSE FRIEND: PARTICULAR

Today and tomorrow, we look at two more false friends for Spanish (and Catalan) speakers.

Today's word is: particular (adjective).

This word can be confusing for Spanish speakers, since it's meaning does not match the same word in Spanish.

Meaning / Use: particular is used before nouns to emphasise that you are talking about a specific or special person or thing and not something else. (It does NOT mean 'private' or 'personal' like the same word in Spanish/Catalan.)

Example 1: Is there any particular English topic that you would like me to cover in the Daily Vitamin?

Example 2: According to recent polls in Barcelona, street crime is an issue of particular concern.
