ATTACH ENGLISH PRACTICE TO AN EXISTING ROUTINE
ATTACH ENGLISH PRACTICE TO AN EXISTING: meaning and examples
Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin, everyone. I hope you are having a good day.
Today we continue with our Daily Vitamins with tips and tools that you can use to be a more successful learner of English. Today we speak about creating a new habit by attaching it to a habit that you already have. If you’ve ever said, “I want to practise English every day, but I don’t have the time,” then this strategy might work for you.
One of the best ways to build a consistent English-learning habit is to attach this new habit to something you already do; this is a technique known as habit stacking, a concept that was popularised by James Clear in his book, Atomic Habits. It is a simple but powerful idea.
This is the idea: After [current habit], I will [new English habit].
🧠 Why does it work?
You don’t need to create a new time slot or force yourself to remember. You’re piggybacking on a habit your brain already recognises. It reduces friction and increases consistency.
✅ Examples:
⇒ After I brush my teeth in the morning, I will listen to a short English podcast.
⇒ After I make my coffee, I will read one page of an article in English.
⇒ After I finish my lunch, I will review 3 vocabulary cards.
You don’t need an hour. You need a trigger and a few minutes of focus. The goal is not perfection; the goal is consistency.
🔄 Start small, then grow.
A two- to five-minute habit, linked to an existing habit, is hard to resist. And once you start, you’ll often do more than you planned.
➡️ Today's Mini Challenge: Think of an English habit that you would like to create and link it to a daily habit that you already do.
For example: While I drink my morning tea, I will read and listen to a Daily Vitamin that I haven't studied yet.
Made a committed decision to do it today!
👉 I encourage you to share your habit-stacking plan from today's mini challenge on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Bluesky). Think of a new habit that you can "stack" on a habit that you already have. Put yourself out there; get out of your comfort zone. :-)
We'll be back tomorrow with a lesson about the difference between systems and goals.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your day.
All the best!
