Today's expression is: like hell
Meaning 1: used to add emphasis (= a lot)
(Significado: se utiliza para añadir énfasis (= mucho))
Example 1:
He studied like hell for his exams. If he doesn't pass, I'll be very surprised.
(Estudió como una fiera para sus exámenes. Si no aprueba, estaré muy sorprendido.)
Example 2:
Sometimes his back hurts like hell, but luckily there is nothing seriously wrong with him.
(A veces le duele la espalda como un demonio, pero por suerte no es nada grave.)
Meaning 2: used in spoken English to refuse permission, or when you don't agree that something is true. In Peninsular Spanish its equivalent is sometimes ¡sí hombre!
(Significado: Se utiliza en el inglés hablado para rechazar permiso, o cuando no crees que algo es verdad. En español peninsular a veces se utiliza "¡sí hombre!")
Example 3:
Matthew: David, can you come with me to the market?
(David, ¿me puedes acompañar al mercado?)
David: No papa. I'm going to stay here and watch TV.
(No papá. Me voy a quedar y mirar la tele.)
Matthew: Like hell you are! You're coming with me to the market whether you like it or not!
(¡Sí hombre! Me acompañarás al mercado tanto si te apetece como si no.)
