Meaning: to make a new discovery or do something that has not been done before.
Example 1:
The scientists' discovery has broken new ground in cancer research.
It's also quite common to use the adjective groundbreaking.
Example 2:
The start-up internet company has just released some groundbreaking technology into the consumer market. This has made their competitors quite nervous.
