SPREAD LIKE A WILDFIRE: meaning and examples

Today we continue our look at some common English expressions that use the word spread in them.  

Today's expression is: to spread like a wildfire

It means: to become known by more and more people very quickly.   

Example 1
The disease spread like a wildfire throughout the country due to limited access to clean drinking water and very unsanitary conditions in general.

Example 2:
The news spread like a wildfire; within minutes virtually everyone in the company knew that the new CEO had been sacked.
