WAY-3: meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today we continue our look at expressions that use the English word way.

Today's 1st expression isto be set in your ways

Meaning: to have habits or opinions that you have had for a long time and that you do not want to change.  

Example 1:
There is no point in talking to your father; he is so set in his ways. He'll never allow you to live with your boyfriend.

Today's 2nd expression is: by the way (spoken English)

Meaning: used to introduce a comment or question that is not directly related to what you have been talking about. In Spanish this is often expressed with por cierto...

Example 2:
Did you enjoy the party yesterday? By the way, what time did you get home?

Example 3:
By the way, what time is it?
