TO MAKE UP SOMETHING: meaning and examples

Hello everyone and good morning. I hope you are having a great day so far.

Today's phrasal verb is: make up something (or make something up)

Meaning: to invent an excuse or explanation; to invent a story (used especially with children).

Example 1: When Barbara invited me to her party, I didn't want to go so I made up an excuse about going out of town for the weekend.

Example 2: My nephew has made up a funny story to explain why the sky is blue and the grass is green. He's such a creative little boy.

⇒ As always, to get some writing practice, I encourage you to write a sentence with today's phrasal verb. You can post your sentence on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Bluesky) and we will give you feedback about it as soon as we can.

We'll be back tomorrow with another lesson. Enjoy the rest of your day.

All the best!
