TENSE TUESDAY: 'WISH' & 'COULD' FOR WISHES ABOUT THE FUTURE: meaning and examples

Hello readers! Happy Tuesday to you all!

What is a wish you have for the future that probably won't come true? That's what today's Tense Tuesday lesson is about: WISH...COULD for wishes about the future.

We use the following form to express a wish about the future.

Subject WISH(ES) COULD BASE VERB

Example 1: I wish I could go with you, but I have to work.

Example 2: He wishes he could say "happy birthday" in person, but he can't be here.

Example 3: I wish I could eat anything I wanted without gaining weight!

In each of these situations, we see that the things that we wish for won't happen, or aren't likely to happen.
