TENSE TUESDAY: PERFECT PASSIVE PARTICIPLE CLAUSES
TENSE TUESDAY: PERFECT PASSIVE PARTICIPLE CLAUSES: meaning and examples
[HAVING BEEN PAST PARTICIPLE, . . . ]
A PERFECT PASSIVE PARTICIPLE CLAUSE usually goes at the beginning of a sentence. It shows an event that happened before the rest of the sentence that comes after the comma.
Example 1: Having been made redundant, I am now looking for a new job. (Because I was made redundant, I am now looking for a new job.)
Example 2: Having been seen, the animal ran away. (Because the animal was seen, it ran away.)
Example 3: Having been cooked the night before, breakfast was ready when we woke up. (Because breakfast was prepared the previous night, it was ready when we woke up the next day.)
Notice that this is a PASSIVE construction, so in each case, we do not see the AGENT of the sentence. In each of the examples, we do not know WHO or WHAT did the action. For more on the passive, check out our recent lesson on the Passive Simple.
