TENSE TUESDAY: PERFECT MODAL VERBS AND 'SHOULD': meaning and examples

Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin, and happy Tuesday to you.

For today's Tense Tuesday, we are looking at the modal verb SHOULD used in PERFECT TENSES (together with the auxiliary verb HAVE).

We use this form to express regret about something we did.

Example 1: I shouldn't have stayed out so late last night. I'm tired today.

Example 2: I should have remembered your birthday. I'm so sorry.

Example 3: You shouldn't have said that to your boss. Now she is really angry.

We also use the expression "You shouldn't have" when someone does something nice for us.

Example 4: You bought me flowers? Oh... you shouldn't have!

We all have regrets from time to time, and this formula will help you express this. Hopefully you do not have to use it too often, though!

That's all for today. Have a great Tuesday!
