TENSE TUESDAY: INVERSIONS PART II (SIMPLE PAST AND FUTURE): meaning and examples

Hello everyone! I hope that you are having a nice start to your week.

In our last Tense Tuesday, we looked at INVERSIONS with the Perfect Tenses. Here is an example:

Example 1: Never have I seen such an amazing performance.

In that lesson, we only looked at how to invert sentences with the Perfect Tenses. This week we are continuing this lesson and inverting the Simple Past and Future tenses. We will again use the word NEVER for emphasis.

To invert the Simple Past, we begin the sentence with NEVER and add the word DID. The Simple Past verb also changes form and becomes a bare infinitive (the infinitive without TO).

Sentence 1 (not inverted): I never wanted children. (Simple Past)

Sentence 2 (inverted): Never did I want children. (Simple Past Inverted)

With the Future (WILL INFINITIVE), we begin the sentence with NEVER and then switch "WILL" and the subject

Sentence 3 (not inverted): I will never talk to her again.

Sentence 4 (inverted): Never will I talk to her again.

We follow the same structure for the future form, BE GOING TO

Sentence 5 (not inverted): I am never going to go shopping there again. The service is terrible.

Sentence 6 (inverted): Never am I going to go shopping there again. The service is terrible.

That's all for today! Thank you for reading. We will see you tomorrow for a Wordy Wednesday vocabulary lesson!
