TENSE TUESDAY: ADVERB PLACEMENT WITH PAST PERFECT: meaning and examples

Hello, readers! Welcome to our Tense Tuesday lesson for May 9th.

Today we are looking at how to place adverbs when using the Past Perfect

Remember that the Past Perfect uses this formula:

had past participle

Adverbs like always, only, never, ever, and just are commonly used with the Past Perfect. We place the adverb between HAD and the PAST PARTICIPLE

had ADVERB past participle

Example 1: I had never seen a dolphin until today. 

Example 2: Last night was fun! I had always wanted to try salsa dancing. 

Example 3: I had only tried plantains once before you made them today. 

Example 4: Had you ever met a famous person before you met Shakira?

Example 5: We had just finished dinner when my Mom called.
