STUFF-1 (REVISION): meaning and examples

Good morning! Today's content was originally covered in November of 2004.

Today's word is: Stuff (noun)

It is an informal noun used to refer to things in a vague and general way. Depending on the context, it can mean:

1) A variety of objects or things.
2) Materials or substances.
3) Personal qualities or behaviour
4) General information

It is also used in different expressions. If you have spoken with native English speakers before, you may have noticed that they use this word a lot. We will look at this very interesting and informal conversational noun for the next few days.

1) STUFF MEANING A VARIETY OF THINGS.

Example 1:
My son always leaves stuff all over the floor in his room. I wish he would learn to clean up after himself.

Example 2:
I always get to the sales ("rebajas") very late and all the good stuff is gone.

2) STUFF MEANING MATERIALS OR SUBSTANCES USED FOR MAKING SOMETHING.

Example 3:
My wife has just gone to the supermarket to buy salad stuff (lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, onions, etc.). We don't have anything in the refrigerator.

Sometimes we use it when we can't remember what the substance or material is called.

Example 4:
Matthew: Mike, what's the name of that stuff used to correct mistakes on paper?
Mike: Correction fluid or Tipp-Ex.

If you have any questions about stuff so far, please post them in the Daily Vitamin Plus! forum section on our website (www.ziggurat.es). We will continue with stuff tomorrow.

Have a great day!
