SONGS FOR THE SUMMER: SUMMER IN THE CI: meaning and examples
Hello everyone and welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope you had a good weekend and I hope your week has started off well.
This week will be our last week of Daily Vitamins before the summer. We'll take a break from July 14th to September 12th and we'll start off the 2025-2026 academic year on Monday the 15th of September.
This week we are going to look at songs related to the summer. We will present one song each day, and we'll start with the oldest song first (1966) and finish with the newest song (2019) on Friday.
Today's song is: Summer in the City
Artist: The Lovin' Spoonful
Here's a brief history of the song from Wikipedia: Summer in the City is a song by the Canadian-American folk-rock band the Lovin' Spoonful. Written by John Sebastian, Mark Sebastian and Steve Boone, the song was released as a non-album single in July 1966 and was included on the album Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful later that year. The single was the Lovin' Spoonful's fifth to break the top ten in the United States, and the only one by the group to reach number one.

SUMMER IN THE CITY
Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck gettin' dirt' and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity?
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people looking half-dead
Walkin' on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head
But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come on, come on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
The days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city
Cool town, evenin' in the city
Dress so fine and lookin' so pretty
Cool cat lookin' for a kitty
Gonna look in every corner of the city
'Til I'm wheezin' like a bus stop
Runnin' up the stairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop
But at night, it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come on, come on and dance all night
Despite the heat, it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
The days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city
Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck gettin' dirt', and, and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity?
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people lookin' half-dead
Walkin' on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head
But at night, it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come on, come on and dance all night
Despite the heat, it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
The days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
Summer in the city
