SING ME A SONG: meaning and examples

We received a request from one of our readers, María José. She wrote, "Tengo una duda: ¿qué es más correcto SING ME A SONG or SING A SONG TO ME? Gracias."
Both options are correct, María José. When we use an indirect object pronoun (me, you, him, her, us, them) after a verb, it can go in two positions:
Position 1: directly after the verb. VERB INDIRECT OBJECT DIRECT OBJECT
Position 2: after the direct object. In this case, the indirect object is preceded by the preposition TO. VERB DIRECT OBJECT TO INDIRECT OBJECT
Example 1:
Please give him the book. / Please give the book to him.
Example 2:
She told them a story. / She told a story to them.
Example 3:
You promised me a raise. / You promised a raise to me.
