SHOOT EXPRESSIONS-ENCORE!: meaning and examples

Hello everyone.

A couple of weeks ago (June 2nd to June 5th) we looked at expressions with SHOOT! Last week I received a request from Judit to include one more SHOOT expression.

Today's SHOOT expression is: To shoot something / someone down

Meaning: To be very critical of someone's ideas, opinions, etc.

Example 1:
Jack's latest proposal was shot down by the CEO. I really felt sorry for him; he had worked so hard on that proposal.

We can also use this expression to mean that someone has been rejected by someone they are interested in.

Example 2:
Mark asked Mary to go to dinner with him this Friday, but he was shot down. She said she was "busy". Ha! I doubt it.

Here is a popular song by Skylar Grey about being shot down, like in example 2.

Here is a much older song (Shot down in Flames, by AC/DC) about the same topic. Sometimes we say SHOT DOWN IN FLAMES to add emphasis. This clearly comes from the idea of shooting down an airplane, but we use it figuratively in these situations.
