RISE vs. FALL: meaning and examples

Good morning. I hope you are having a great day.

Today we are going to look at synonyms for yesterday's Daily Vitamin words: increase and decrease.

RISE
It means: to increase.

We usually use this verb to indicate that a specific amount or quantity or number of something is increasing. To say how much something has increased (with a specific amount), we use the preposition by. This word can also be used as a noun.

Example 1: Unemployment in this country is steadily rising. The latest information states that the unemployment rate has risen by 2.5 percent this year.

Example 2: There has been a rise in the number of women politicians over the last five years.

FALL
It means: to decrease.

It is the opposite of rise, but we use it in the same way.

Example 3: The number of people living in the country fell significantly in the last century.

Example 4: The fall in the price of textiles, due to imports from China, is worrying the European textile industry.
