MARGARITAVILLE (JIMMY BUFFETT): meaning and examples

Happy Wednesday everyone and welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope your day is going well.

Today we look at another song related to the summer which, like yesterday's song, was published in the 1970s.

Today's song is: Margaritaville

Artist: Jimmy Buffett

Here's a brief history of the song from Wikipedia: Margaritaville is a 1977 song by American singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, released on his seventh album, "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes." In the United States, "Margaritaville" reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and went to number one on the Easy Listening chart, also peaking at No. 13 on the Hot Country Songs chart. Billboard ranked it number 14 on its 1977 Pop Singles year-end chart. It was Buffett's highest charting solo single. After Buffett’s death on September 1, 2023, the song re-entered the Top 40 for the week ending September 16, 2023.

You can listen to the song at the following linkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrF4nF8VUb4

And, as always, below we include the lyrics to the song so that you can follow along. You'll see lots of words that end in -ing that are written as -in', to better reflect the pronunciation of those words in the song.

I hope you like the song!

MARGARITAVILLE
Nibblin' on sponge cake, watchin' the sun bake
All of those tourists covered with oil
Strummin' my six-string, on my front porch swing
Smell those shrimp, they're beginnin' to boil

Wastin' away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
But I know, it's nobody's fault

Don't know the reason, I stayed here all season
Nothin' to show but this brand new tattoo
But it's a real beauty, a Mexican cutie
How it got here I haven't a clue

Wastin' away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
Now I think, hell, it could be my fault

I blew out my flip-flop, stepped on a pop top
Cut my heel, had to cruise on back home
But there's booze in the blender, and soon it will render
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on

Wastin' away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
But I know, it's my own damn fault

Yes, and some people claim that there's a woman to blame
And I know, it's my own damn fault
