LIKE vs. AS (3): meaning and examples

Good morning!

Today we will finish our series on LIKE vs. AS with another example of how to use these words.

Today's structure is: AS noun

We use AS in this structure to state the job/role/function of a person or thing.

Example 1
I work as an English teacher. My husband works as a mechanic.

Example 2
I am using this bowl as a flower pot

Example 3
The company is employing James as a spokesperson for this campaign.

BE CAREFUL! Don't confuse LIKE in the above sentences. LIKE has the meaning of 'similar to' and it is used for comparison.

Example 4
You work like a dog! You deserve to take a holiday and relax.

This concludes our series on LIKE and AS. However, these words are used in many more expressions. If you have any questions about them, please write to us on our Facebook page or leave us a comment in the Daily Vitamin section on our website.

Remember that tomorrow we present the Essential Weekly Vitamin for Spanish-speaking students of English. We hope you will find it as helpful as our English one!

Have a fantastic day!
