I DON'T GET IT: meaning and examples

Hello once again, everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope you had a great week, and I hope your day is going well.

Today we look at one final use of the very versatile English verb, TO GET. This time we will look at a very common informal use of GET that means to understand someone or something. Consider the following examples.

Example 1: Everyone laughed at the joke, but Maria didn't get it.

In other words, Maria didn't understand the joke, so she didn't laugh.

Example 2: Speaker 1 enters the room where Speaker 2 is watching a film.
Speaker 1: I don't get it. What's happening?
Speaker 2: He has decided to stay with his ex-wife.
Speaker 1: Oh...now I get it.

Can you create your own sentence or dialogue that demonstrates this use of TO GET? I encourage you to write a sentence (or two) on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Bluesky) and we will correct your sentences as soon as possible.

We'll be back on Monday with a lesson about the noun, MATTER.

Enjoy the rest of your day and have an excellent weekend!
