Definition: to think or behave in a way that disagrees with how most other people think or behave. To not follow what everyone else is doing. 

Example 1: Politically, she tends to swim against the tide on her college campus. This has caused her some problems. 

Example 2: The President generally appeared to be swimming against the tide in international politics.
