CHRISTMAS VOCABULARY (TANNENBAUM): meaning and examples

Hello everyone. Due to holidays in Spain, there will only be a Daily Vitamin today (Tuesday) and on Thursday and Friday this week. Tomorrow, December 8th, is also a bank holiday in Spain, so there will be no Daily Vitamin.

This week we are looking at vocabulary related to Christmas, as we are getting close to the Christmas season.

Today's Christmas vocabulary is: Tannenbaum

Definition: Tannenbaum is actually a German word which means Fir Tree, and which, in the middle of the 19th century, became associated with Christmas, due to a song written by the composer Ernst Anschütz. The song eventually became a Christmas Carol, so Tannenbaum also means Christmas Tree.

The song has been translated into many languages. Below are links to a couple of YouTube videos of the song: one in German and one in Engish.
German (the original): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lS4wTuvR7Ik
English: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GgKvykR7WI

In the English version of the Christmas carol, we say "O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree" instead of "O Tannenbaum". The lyrics of the English version vary a lot. You can find different versions of the lyrics. Here is a version sung by Aretha Franklin, where she mixes English and German: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPxnqlF064Y

I  hope you enjoy the song. Have a great day and an excellent week!
