A NARROW ESCAPE: meaning and examples

Hello everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin.

Today's Daily Vitamin topic was suggested by one of our subscribers, Pilar.

Today's Expression is: To have a narrow (or lucky) escape.

It means: to avoid being killed or seriously injured because you were lucky or made a very big effort.

Example 1:
A couple driving in the Pyrenees had a narrow escape when a giant tree fell just in front of their car. If they had arrived just two seconds before, they would be dead.

Example 2:
It's very typical in American action films for the protagonist to have a very narrow escape every five minutes. Frankly, I think it's quite boring.

Example 3:
He managed to get out of the building just minutes before it fell. What a lucky escape he had!

Thanks for the suggestion, Pilar.

⇒ In order to get some writing practice, I encourage you to write your own sentence with today's expression. You can post your sentence to one of our social media sites (Facebook or Bluesky) and we will give you feedback about your writing as soon as possible.

Remember that next Monday, October 12, there will be no Daily Vitamin due to a national holiday in Spain.

I hope everyone has a great day and an excellent weekend!
