NAIL-1: meaning and examples

Good morning everyone. I hope you had a nice weekend.

This week there will only be three Daily Vitamins, since there is a bank holiday this Thursday (May Day or International Workers' Day). We have also decided to take a long weekend (or 'puente', as they call it in Spanish), so there will be no Essential Weekly Vitamin on Friday either.

This week we present a short series of Daily Vitamins about expressions with the word NAIL. We're referring to a small thin pointed piece of metal with a flat head, used for hanging things on a wall or for joining pieces of wood together, NOT fingernails.

Today's expression is: to nail something down

Meaning 1: to fasten something down with a nail or nails.

Example 1:
We nailed the board down so that it would stop making noise when the wind blows.

Meaning 2: to reach an agreement or a decision, usually after a lot of discussion.

Example 2:
All of the parties involved in the war seem willing to nail down a ceasefire.

If you have questions about any of these meanings or examples, don't hesitate to ask us in the Daily Vitamin section on our website, by clicking on the "Add a Comment" button. Or, we welcome you to post your questions and comments on our Facebook page.

Have a great day!
