TO ABSTAIN: meaning and examples
Good morning!
Today we finish our series about vocabulary related to elections.
Today's word is: to abstain (regular: abstained); abstention (noun)
It means: to formally decide not to vote. (Note: We can also abstain from doing things, which means NOT to do something, like drink alcohol or smoke.)
Example 1:
Lewis does not like any of the candidates so he has decided to abstain.
Example 2:
The abstention rates in the latest election were so high that the government is considering making voting obligatory.
I hope this week's Daily Vitamins have added to your ability to talk about election results. Tomorrow we present the Essential Weekly Vitamin in Spanish.
Have a wonderful day!
