PUSH-1: meaning and examples

Good morning everyone.

In November of 2009, we did a series of Daily Vitamins about expressions with the English verb PULL. This week we will look at expressions with PUSH, which is the opposite of PULL.

The basic meaning of PUSH is: to use your hands, arms or body to make someone or something move forward or away from you.

Example 1:
When the car broke down, we had to push it for almost a mile.

The most interesting use of PUSH, however, is in different expressions. We'll look at one expression today, and over the next few days we will look at five or six more.

Today's push expression is: to be pushing 30, 40, 50, etc.

Meaning: to be nearly 30, 40, 50, etc. years old.

Example 2:
She looks very young, but she is pushing 50. How does she do it?

Remember to post comments and questions about today's lesson in the Daily Vitamin section on our website; please don't send us emails with questions.

Tomorrow we will push on with our review of push expressions.

Have a great day!
