THROW IN THE TOWEL: meaning and examples

Hello everyone. Welcome back to another Daily Vitamin lesson. I hope you are having a great day.

Today we look at two more common idiomatic expressions. Learning idiomatic expressions and using those expressions can make your English more interesting and native-like.

Today's 1st expression is: to throw in the towel

Meaning: to give up or to admit defeat.

Example 1: After months of trying to fix his 1957 Chevy coupe, he finally threw in the towel and bought a new car.

Today's 2nd expression is: to cost an arm and a leg

Meaning: used to describe something that is very expensive.

Example 2: The concert tickets cost an arm and a leg, but it was worth it! It was one of the best concerts I have ever seen.

👉 Now it's your turn to practice. I encourage you to write your own sentences with one or both of today's expressions and post them on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Bluesky) and we will give you feedback about your writing ASAP.

We'll be back tomorrow with the last lesson of the week.

All the best!
