SHAREHOLDER: meaning and examples

Good morning everyone.

Today's word is: shareholder

Meaning: an owner of shares in a company or business (Spanish = accionista

Example 1:
Because of the crisis, the owners of the company have decided to sell the business. The only problem is that one of the major shareholders is against the sale, so I don't know what will happen.

The noun share refers to the units of equal value into which a company is divided and sold to raise money. Shares can also be called stocks, which is where the term stock market comes from (Spanish = mercado de valores / mercado bursátil).

Example 2:
Despite falling stock prices, the economy continues to be strong.

Example 3:
When he saw the state of the stock market, he decided to sell all of his shares in Apple. I think he made a mistake.
