LOOPHOLE: meaning and examples

Meaning: Loophole is used in legal contexts to indicate when there is a mistake in the way a law or contract has been written, which enables people to legally avoid doing something that the law or contract theoretically obliges them to do.

Example 1:
The company found various loopholes in the tax code which allowed them to pay virtually no taxes in 2008, despite earning more than 10 million euros.

Example 2
Due to a loophole in the criminal law code, the thief was set free.
