CHECK (1): meaning and examples

Good morning, The word check is very common in English, and it can be both a verb and a noun. Over the next few days we will look at different uses of this word. Today's word is: check (verb) MEANING 1: to examine something in order to confirm that it is as it should be; to make certain of something. Example 1 When the package arrived, he checked the contents carefully. Example 2 When we arrived to the boarder, the official checked our passports. Example 3 Speaker A: Is John there? Speaker B: I think he has gone home... but let me check. MEANING 2: to stop yourself or someone else from doing something; to stop something bad from happening. Example 4 Jack was going to say something, but he checked himself when he saw the expression on the teacher's face. Example 5 The government is taking measures to check the spread of Malaria.
