ASLEEP: meaning and examples

Meaning: sleeping

In English we have the verb to sleep and the noun sleep. Asleep is an adjective that means sleeping. We usually use it with the verb BE (to be asleep=estar dormido) and the verb FALL (to fall asleep=dormirse).

Example 1
The baby was sound asleep. (sound = totally or thoroughly, in this context)

Example 2
I was so tired that I fell asleep at my desk.

Example 3:
John was still half asleep (not fully awake) when he arrived at work.
