AFRAID: meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today's word is: Afraid (adjective)

Meaning: Frightened. Feeling fear.

Similar to the other adjectives we have seen this week, in English we have the verb to fear and the noun fear. Afraid is an adjective that means frightened. We usually use it with the verb BE (to be afraid=tener miedo).

Example 1
Some people are more afraid of quitting their job and changing their lives than driving drunk.

Example 2
Ron is afraid of spiders.

We also use afraid as a polite way of telling somone something that is unpleasant or disappointing, or that you are sorry about.

Example 3:
I'm afraid I can't help you. I'm sorry.
