ANIMAL EXPRESSIONS: DOG: meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today we will continue with expressions in English that include animals. We will look at expressions with dog today.

Today's 1st expression is: as sick as a dog (informal)

It means: to be very ill; to be vomiting a lot.

Example 1:
Sandra: We had to cancel the meeting.
Jack: Why?
Sandra: The boss is as sick as a dog. He went home for the day.

Today's 2nd expression is: dog eat dog

It means: a situation, usually in business or politics, where there is a lot of competition and people are willing to harm each other to become successful.

Example 2:
We're operating in a dog eat dog world.

Example 3:
It's a case of dog eat dog in the television industry.

Today's 3rd expression is: every dog has his/its day

It's used: to say that every person will have a time in their life when they are important, lucky or successful. We often use it to remind someone that they will eventually be successful.

Example 4:
Be patient! Remember that every dog has its day.
