Definition: an important event that symbolises movement from one stage of life to another. 

Example 1: Learning to drive is like a rite of passage for many teenagers in the US.

Example 2: In my family, when a child turns 14, they can take the metro alone. It's like a rite of passage to buy your first metro card!
