WHAT IF WE... INSTEAD?
WHAT IF WE... INSTEAD?: meaning and examples
Good morning / afternoon / evening everyone, depending on when you are reading this lesson. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope your week has started off well.
Today we continue with our look at phrases that we can use when we want to compromise or be more flexible. Again, these phrases can be especially useful when you are negotiating or arguing with someone, and you are interested in looking for ways to find common ground.
Today's phrase is: What if we... instead?
This is a polite way to suggest an alternative.
Example:
Lisa: Mike, we're going to need to increase the budget. Can you talk to the director to see if that's possible?
Mike: What if we adjusted the timeline instead of changing the budget? If we can eliminate a couple of weeks from the timeline, then the budget is fine.
Lisa: That's a great idea. I think that would work.
👉 Can you write your own sentence or dialogue with today's phrase. You can post your sentence on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Bluesky) and we will give you feedback about your writing as soon as we can. We appreciate your participation.
I hope the rest of your day goes well. All the best!
