VEGETABLE EXPRESSIONS-5: meaning and examples

Good morning everyone.

Today we finish our look at common vegetable expressions in English.

Today's expression is: The carrot and stick (approach)

Meaning: to persuade someone to make more of an effort by offering them a reward if they do something well, and punishment if they do not. In other words, it's the combination of rewarding good behaviour and punishing bad behaviour.

Example 1:
Most prisons take a carrot-and-stick approach to the rehabilitation of juvenile criminals.

Example 2:
The carrot-and-stick approach doesn't work too well with my son. He prefers the carrot-carrot approach. ;-)
