UNDER THE COUNTER / TABLE: meaning and examples

Good morning everyone.

Today's expression is: under the counter / table

Meaning: secretly and often illegally; clandestine.

Example 1:
Many of the factory employees work more than 70 hours per week, and they are paid under the counter.

Example 2:
The mayor of the city has made quite a bit of money under the table making deals with the mafia.
