TO / TWO / TOO: meaning and examples

Hello everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin! I hope you're having a good day.

Today we look at one last group of homophones in English; this time three words that are pronounced exactly the same.

Today's homophones are: TO, TWO & TOO

Meaning "to": to is a preposition that is used in many different ways.

For example, before a verb to show that is is an infinitive...

Example 1: To be or not to be. That is the question.

It's used with an infinitive to express use or purpose.

Example 2: I'm travelling to the US to see my mother.

It's used after some question words.

Example 3: I do not know what to do.

Meaning "two": two is the number 2.

Example 4: She has two sisters and two brothers.

Meaning "too": too is an adverb meaning 'more.'

We can use it to mean more than is needed or wanted; more than is suitable or enough.

Example 5: I would buy that car, but it's too expensive.

It can also mean 'also,' especially at the end of a sentence.

Example 6: I would like to go to the cinema too.

There are more ways these words can be used, but I think we've covered the most common. So now it's your turn, can you write an original English sentence with one, two or three of these homophones? You can post your sentences on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter/X) and we will give you feedback as soon as possible.

I sincerely hope that you have a great day. We'll be back tomorrow with a lesson about gratitude

All the best!
