TO LAP SOMETHING UP: meaning and examples

Good morning everyone. I hope you had a good long weekend.

For the rest of this week, we are going to look at a few expressions that use the word lap in them. 

Today's expression is: to lap something up

Meaning 1: to lick something up with the tongue (usually done by an animal).

Example 1:
When the ice cream fell on the floor, the boy called the dog to come and lap it up. It worked; the dog lapped the ice cream up in about 60 seconds.

This expression can also mean to enjoy something very much (food or something else).

Example 2:
The rock star lapped up all the attention he was getting from the young female fans.

Meaning 2: to accept something or receive something with great enthusiasm and enjoyment, without worrying about whether it's true, good or sincere.

Example 3:
Even when the government lies, the majority of the people lap up their statements because they want to believe that the government always tells the truth.

Example 4:
It's a terrible film, but audiences all over Spain are lapping it up.
