Today's expression is: to fall behind
Meaning: to fail to keep level with somebody or something; to make less progress.
Example 1:
Ten miles into the marathon, he began to fall behind. He finished in 45th place.
Example 2:
My son was ill for a week, and fell behind with his school work.
