THE SQUEAKY WHEEL: meaning and examples

Good morning.

Today's expression is: The squeaky wheel gets the oil or The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Meaning: When people say that the squeaky wheel gets the grease, they mean that the person who complains or protests the loudest attracts attention and service. This is especially popular in US English.

Example 1:
When Jack goes to a restaurant, he generally insists on a better table and gets it (no matter what table they give him)--the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Example 2:
If you want them to pay attention to you, then complain a lot. You know how it is...the squeaky wheel gets the oil.
